Doctors - Take a leadership role against routine infant circumcision

Please protect my foreskin

You do not have to perform a circumcision just because a parent asks. The baby is your patient, after all, not the parent.

If a parent requests circumcision, and many will, your job becomes one of educator - to educate the parent about the benefit of foreskin and every person's right to genital integrity.

We encourage you to take a leadership role in ending non-therapeutic infant circumcision.

Here are some ideas to get you started:
  • Provide informative pamphlets about the benefits of foreskin and the enigma of circumcision in American society.

  • If you have a web site, include a link to this circumcision decision maker

  • If you are an OB, pro-actively educate pregnant patients about the harms of circumcision and the functions of foreskin as soon as you confirm she carries a male child.

  • Do everything you can to normalize the appearance of intact genitalia. Make sure all hand outs and pictures display the penis in its whole, natural, uncut form. Ban pictures of circumcised penises from your office.

  • Consider partnering with a rabbi who endorses the alternative bris shalom
Circumcision rates peaked in this country in the 1970's, so many of today's parents have no experience with foreskin. It is up to you to educate them.
